Magnesium is a highly mobile element in the plant. It is one of the mineral constituents of chlorophyll (it gives the green color to the plant). Magnesium deficiency can cause yellowing between the veins on the lower leaves (chlorosis intervainaire). The tip of the leaf margins tend to curl up. Sometimes (as in crucifers, corn and blueberries), old leaves turn red or purple coloring. An excess of magnesium does not produce tellemenmt direct toxicity of plants but rather an imbalance with insufficient absorption of potassium or calcium.
